A is for Apples

I love all things apple. Apple cider, apple pie, apple butter, apple crisp, apples themselves, you name it. There is nothing that is made with an apple that I won't eat. Not to mention they are soo good for you.

Growing up we went apple picking as a family. We always went to Applecrest Farm in Hampton Falls, NH. The hubby and I continue the tradition with our kids every year as well. Every weekend during apple picking season, the farm throws huge festivals. There is tons of pumpkins, bluegrass music, scarecrow making, tons of food to eat, farm animals to pet and feed, not to mention the hay rides.

Now, we are blessed to live 5 minutes down the street from them. I tend to go there at least once a week during the warm months to pick up veggies and other things we do not grow or make. This farm also supplies our local grocery stores with apples too, but there is something about going to pick the apples yourself (yes it costs a bunch more but the apples are huge and sooo worth it).

Here are some of the recipes that I like to make using apples:

Apple Butter

Apple Sauce

Apple Pie In a Bag

Dehydrated Apple Slices

Apple Crisp

What kind of things to you like with apples?

  1. We make our own applesauce. Now that we have a Vitamix we don;t have to cook them in a pot on the stove any more.

    1. I would love a Vitamix. Tried to bribe my husband to get me one until he saw how much they cost.

  2. How nice to have local apples right up the road! We have planted a few trees over the years but it will be a few more generations before they can really appreciate them! We have to travel a couple of hours to get ours from the farmers market but at least they are directly from the farmer. Can't wait to see more posts!

    1. We are pretty lucky to have a bunch of family farms near us. We go to another about 20 minutes away from us to pick the best corn. I got 26 dozen last year and froze and canned it. Soo yummy!

    1. Apple pie in a bag is basically the apple pie filling thrown in a bag and frozen that way. Then when we want to bake a apple pie, you just throw the mix into the crust in a pie plate and cook away. Saves me room in my freezers,

  4. We just moved into a new place and, while far from having sufficient space for homesteading, I do have a room for a little orchard. We'll definitely be including an apple tree or two in the mix!

    1. We live in a mobile home park, but we actually have a pretty decent side and back yard. Luckily our landlord doesn't mind that we turned the backyard into a huge garden. We do give him some veggies too, soo hehe. Not sure how long we will be here, so I don't want to plant any fruit trees yet, but I totally want an orchard of my own.

  8. Apple pie in a bag sounds like a great way to store apples. I'll have to try it sometime. This past week while staying with my parents I enjoyed a wonderful apple crisp made by my sister who lives just down the road from them. My favorite way to eat raw apples is with peanut butter and/or caramel sauce.
